An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative Polden Hill type brooch of Roman date (80-120 AD). The wings are near complete with flat and pierced end caps. The axis bar, spring and pin are lost. The spring was probably formed of copper alloy wire which was held in place by an external cord which is fixed to an eroded rearward facing hook positioned at the midpoint on the upper edge of the reverse. A large square shaped depression is positioned at the mid-point of the wings - it is likely this was filled with an organic cement to fix the spring in place. The head of the brooch…
