A lead die, probably dating from the Medieval or post-Medieval period, about AD 1300 - 1800. The numerical holes have been crudely punched into each surface and opposing sides do not total seven. 1 opposes 3 (which is arranged in a straight line across the centre of the face parallel to the edge rather than diagonal; 4 opposes 2 (but one hole of 4 is filled with corrosion, and 2 is entirely corroded and is only presumed to be 2). The dots of the 4 are arranged in a lozenge. 5 is arranged as a plus (+) rather than a cross (X) and opposes 6, where again, not all the holes are visible. T…

Object type: STYLUS
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cumbria
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead stylus of medieval or post-medieval date (c. 1100 - 1700 AD). The object has a solid, cylindrical body which narrows at two sides to form a flat edge which is pointed to one side. The object has a matt, white patina. It is 77.88mm in length and 12.01mm in diameter.
This type of stylus was probably used to mark slate; as a similar form was used from medieval times well into the post-medieval period, it is difficult to date precisely without archaeological context. Similar examples recorded on the database include: CORN-1C863B and DUR-805C57.

County: Wakefield
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A probable lead musket ball, of Post-Medieval date, about AD 1750 - 1900. A casting seam is not visible, suggesting it dates from later than the English Civil Wars, and the weight is consistent with pistol shot used by British Forces from the late 18th century onwards. The ball has impacted against something convex and smooth, leaving the ball as a sub-hemispherical shape, with a concave face and irregular convex surface. The shot is 18.5mm in diameter and weighs 12.7g, suggesting that it was intended for use in a pistol (Harding D F, 2012, Lead Shot of the English Civil War). It has …

A lead possible domino of probable Post Medieval date, about AD 1700 - 1900. It is a plain flat rectangle of lead, which is the right proportions for a domino, but it has no dots marking value. It may be another object such as a weight. It is 34.4mm long, 18.4mm wide and 4.6mm thick. 23g.
The earliest domino sets are thought to date from the 13th century and originate in China. The game reached Europe by the 18t…

The front face has a cast decoration depicting the head and shoulders of a crowned and robed woman (possibly representing the Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven).
The shape of the loop, which is missing in this example, might help to determine the age of the button. See similar examples on the PAs database: SF-A1953A, CAM-EB7953. The symbolism in the design is discussed in Bailey, G. p.24 and he suggests that maybe these were actually used a…
