Copper alloy button. Flat plain discoid button with an integral swelling centrally on the back whence a loop has been lost. The thickness may here hint at design respecting the metric system introduced in Europe by Napoleon c.1800. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1825-1900. Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron buckle, as kindly identified by the finder. Cast rectangular frame, apparently of square section though this could be the result of the spalling of corrosion before the discovery of the object. A constriction on one side was perhaps for the pin, and implies the use of the buckle with its shorter sides top and bottom [as described here]. The mass may imply good survival of the metal core, and consequently a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1900. Length: 57.8mm, Height: 78.0mm, Thickness: 7.7mm, Weight: 55.88gms

Copper alloy ring. Cast lentoid section ring, possibly worn thinner on opposite sides and possibly also flat at these points on its outer edges, which would point to a series of objects cast linked together. This is a trait shared with the larger harness rings which are ascribed a loose medieval date. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500. Iron possible nail. A small object comprising a kinked shank and an expanded corroded head; tested with a magnet, to which it responds strongly. The sharp angle might have served as a shearman's clip or a tenterhook to peg out cloth, or it may be a horseshoe nail. The mass tends to point to good survival of a metal core, and consequently a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1900. Lead metalworking debris. A small thick lump of poured lead melt which has set on a flat and finely sanded surface. Patinated. A sand bed was required for professional lead working, so this may be debris from a formal scheme of casting rather than casual activity. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Post-Medieval, 43-1800. Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Lead possible weight. A disc cut from thick [up to 4mm] cast lead sheet, possibly with a toothed wheel which appears to have left billeted marks around the edge. A pair of cuts of length c.20mm hare executed from opposite edges, and one side of the object has subsequently been bent over on itself. Patinated, with slight more recent abrasion revealing grey metal. The slashes may represent the cancellation of a weight, perhaps representing two [underweight] averdepois ounces. Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy and iron unidentified object fragment. Cast oval-ended wedge-profile terminal, possibly from a plain spoon handle, though the thickened end introduces some doubt. Extensive traces of rust may represent extrusion from a corroding ferrous metal stiffening rod. This was a feature of spoons made of the tin/antimony alloy Britannnia Metal from c.1795, and of other cast pewter spoons from the 1770s onwards (Hume 1969 [1991 edition consulted], A Guide to Artifacts of Colonial America, Vintage Books, New York, page 184). This might alternatively be a ferrous metal object with a thi…

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter c.12mm, Walton Rogers form A1; patinated. The whorl has been subjected to a distorting impact. The spindle hole, though distorted, is probably of a size [i.e. over 9mm] to indicate an Anglo-Scandinavian date. Notches at either end of the now-oval hole might be tying notches, and might signal the conversion of whorl to line weight. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950.
