Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with a central moulded aperture of diameter c.12mm, Walton Rogers form A1; patinated. The whorl has been subjected to a distorting impact. The spindle hole, though distorted, is probably of a size [i.e. over 9mm] to indicate an Anglo-Scandinavian date. Notches at either end of the now-oval hole might be tying notches, and might signal the conversion of whorl to line weight. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-950. Lead alloy and iron unidentified object fragment. Cast oval-ended wedge-profile terminal, possibly from a plain spoon handle, though the thickened end introduces some doubt. Extensive traces of rust may represent extrusion from a corroding ferrous metal stiffening rod. This was a feature of spoons made of the tin/antimony alloy Britannnia Metal from c.1795, and of other cast pewter spoons from the 1770s onwards (Hume 1969 [1991 edition consulted], A Guide to Artifacts of Colonial America, Vintage Books, New York, page 184).
