An incomplete and eroded cast copper alloy Colchester derivative Polden Hill type brooch of Roman date (80-120 AD). The wings are near complete being semi-cylindrical in plan; the flat end caps are pierced. The axis bar, spring and pin are lost or fragmentary as the rear oft he head of the brooch is encased in an orange corrosion product. This suggests that the spring was probably formed of iron wire; it would have been held in place by an external cord which is fixed to a now much abraded rearward facing hook positioned at the midpoint on the upper edge of the reverse. The head of th…

Two copper alloy vessels, from Ashtead Common Vessel 1: A thin-walled, globular copper alloy vessel in two parts: the body (1.a, 2nd photo) and flat base (1.b, 3rd photo). (1.a) The body section is damaged at both top at bottom. The side that is most likely the top is irregularly torn and distorted. No rim survives. The better preserved side, most likely the base, appears to have been deliberately cut, giving a reasonably flat edge. The body is very thin and uniformly round, suggesting that it may have been made by lathe turning rather than raising. Diameter: 130mm Height:…
