The ring measures 20.8 mm in diameter, and weighs 1.25 g. The mark of a crown and the figure of 18 was introduces in 1798 to identify 18 carat gold. Object type: FINGER RING

County: Warwickshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete finger ring which has a D-sectioned hoop. The edges of the finger ring are quite sharp and fresh, suggesting the ring had not been worn or at least worn only for a short time. The interior has an inscription reading 'fortunate if favoured' in lower case - the 'v' in the second word is written as a 'u'. There is not a maker's mark. Dimensions: 18.08mm diameter on the exterior, 16.13mm on the interior, 2.99mm thick and weighs 1.58g. Discussion: The absence of a maker's mark makes precise dating difficult. The style of the lettering is 17th century, although it contin…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy ring, possibly a medieval (c. 14th - early-15th century) buckle missing its pin. The frame has flattened upper and lower surfaces, creating an oval section. There is no recess or restraining notch for a pin, suggesting this may have been a buckle rather than a brooch (an alternative is that this was a netting ring, but the frame appears too thick). There are file marks on the surface. Diameter 26 mm, thickness 4 mm, Weight 2.6 g

Fragment of Medieval rectangular double-looped buckle frame, edge decorated with baluster mouldings and parts of sides and narrowed central bar with flat-sectioned copper alloy pin. Extant length 23mm. Width 37mm. A very similar example from London has been dated to the middle of the 13th century. (Fingerlin 1971, Abb. 44 Kat. Nr. 292). Perhaps a 15th-century date is more likely. Cf. also Whitehead 2003 no. 477, dated c.1450 - 1600.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint with cortex spot, lithic implement. An irregular star-shaped flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with an almost flat ventral surface. This initial working was followed by the development of a misty patina suggesting a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. The flake was reused, as evidenced by the trimming of patinated surfaces by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following the edges of the object, and by more limited angled scalar retouch of the initially ventral surface executed from the ventral aspect. Light crushing occur…

Two copper alloy vessel fragments from a bowl or dish, probably of late medieval to post-medieval date (c. 1200 - 1600). The two pieces, although found a metre apart, fit together easily, suggesting the break occurred post burial, with both edges still sharp. Grey flint with cortex patches, scraper. A thick chunk with large broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side by hard hammer, and with its opposite side [not here characterised as ventral as cortex remains on both the sides] stripped by multangular hard hammer working similarly removing large parallel flakes. The appearance of finer retouch probably arises from edge-on impacts and localised crushing of edges may arise from use of the tool. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Copper alloy unidentified object. The finder kindly suggests this to be an umbonate plate brooch. However, there is neither fastening gear nor traces of its loss, while the form is smaller than, and also differs in other detail from, plate brooches of this appearance featured in Mackreth's 2011 corpus. The object is a cast circular concavo-convex plate with seven hemispherical knops equidistantly spaced around its edge, the display face retaining white metal plating overall.
