A complete copper-alloy nail of possible Roman date (c. AD. 43 - 410) although could date to the modern period.
The head of the nail is has been flattened and is now folded against the shank, but appears to have once been roughly circular in plan. Beneath the head extends an integral shank which is roughly square in section and tapers to a blunt terminal. The shank has been bent and does not extend vertically down from the head. The object is mid to dark brown in colour with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement within the plough soil, has resulted in the loss o…

Copper alloy brooch. Cast Colchester derivative brooch, Mackreth type CD RH 4.k. Plain semi-circular wings, open behind and with solder traces at one end woithin, are clasped by a plain bow of rounded section which is surmounted by a rearward facing hook. The bow tapers to a plain foot with a folded catch plate pierced by a small [diameter 1.5mm] hole. The rearhook fastening is associated with the Iceni tribe, and this type may pre-date the Boudiccan revolt of AD61, which was followed by severe reprisals and probably a diaspora of the survivors. A complete finger ring which has a D-sectioned hoop. The edges of the finger ring are quite sharp and fresh, suggesting the ring had not been worn or at least worn only for a short time.
The interior has an inscription reading 'fortunate if favoured' in lower case - the 'v' in the second word is written as a 'u'. There is not a maker's mark.
Dimensions: 18.08mm diameter on the exterior, 16.13mm on the interior, 2.99mm thick and weighs 1.58g.
Discussion: The absence of a maker's mark makes precise dating difficult. The style of the lettering is 17th century, although it contin…

Fragment of Medieval rectangular double-looped buckle frame, edge decorated with baluster mouldings and parts of sides and narrowed central bar with flat-sectioned copper alloy pin. A copper alloy ring, possibly a medieval (c. 14th - early-15th century) buckle missing its pin. The frame has flattened upper and lower surfaces, creating an oval section. There is no recess or restraining notch for a pin, suggesting this may have been a buckle rather than a brooch (an alternative is that this was a netting ring, but the frame appears too thick). There are file marks on the surface.

Two copper alloy vessel fragments from a bowl or dish, probably of late medieval to post-medieval date (c. 1200 - 1600). A lead alloy object, in shape a truncated cone with a flat top and base. A 10 mm diameter perforation, slightly off-centre, runs from top to base and is currently filled with depositional material. The object is probably a spindle whorl or loom-weight, and is difficult to date precisely: probably medieval to medieval (c 900-1500). All surfaces have a dark grey patina. There are faint vertical lines or scratches around the sides; due to the patina it is difficult to say if these represent decoration or are just due to abrasion; there are also some radiating groves on the lower surface …

A lead object, probably a palm guard of post-medieval date (c 1500 - 1800). It is a shallow dome with an uneven surface and is sub-circular in plan. The base is slightly concave. In form, it resembles several objects described on this database as medieval weights but is considerably larger and heavier. There are several deep puncture marks and scratches on the base, some square-shaped. This suggests that the object may have been used as a form of palm guard.

County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A lead and iron steelyard weight, probably of Roman date (AD 43 - 410). The object is conical in shape with a flat base. From the blunt tip emerge two short stubs of ferrous wire, probably the remains of the suspension loop. There is a shallow, corroded loop of wire (3 mm diameter) protruding from the base; this seems a common feature in Roman steelyard weights. The object has a pale cream patina on all surfaces, and several dents and scratches that are probably post-depositional.

A fragment of an iron hand made nail of uncertain date. The head has heavy corrosion, it shows a sub rectangular plan, sloping to each corner, and each face has a sub triangular, almost D-shaped profile. The shank has a rectangular base, tapering to an apparently old break after 25 mm. Shank is 13 mm by 17 mm at the base, 10 mm by 13 mm at the break. The head is 44 mm wide, 48 mm long and 17 mm thick. The size of the head suggests the nail was not for use in domestic furniture. Possible door stud. Object type: JETTON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A copper-alloy jetton of Medieval date 1280-1345 of English origin and based on the contemporary silver long-cross coinage. The obverse image may represent a transition between the king's bust type (e.g. Mitchiner 1988: 101) and the lion type (e.g. Mitchiner: 113, no. 216). The reverse cross is similar in form to Mitchiner no. 202 (p. 112).
The jetton survives in good condition, with a dark green patina and little wear or corrosion. It measures 20.09mm in diameter, 1.5mm thick and weighs 3.6g.

A post-medieval, probably 17th century, gold posy ring inscribed I + LIKE x MY x CHOIS on the inside of the hoop. The outside surface is convex and undecorated, and the object is D-shaped in cross-section.
It measures 21.8mm in diameter (internal diameter 18.9mm) and weighs 5.65g. The hoop is 5.3mm wide.
Variations on the inscription "I like my choice" are known on a number of post-medieval precious metal finger-rings, presumably intended as a betrothal ring. See also Evans, J. 1931; 54. A similar inscription has also been recorded on a thimble of similar date from Hampshire, HAMP-2F7BD6.
