TREASURE CASE : 2018 T699. Description: Decorated cross pendant of stamped gold, with 4 bifurcated arms terminating in 8 slightly scrolling points. The outer edge of the cross is characterised by a continuous raised band decorated with diagonal slashes, some now crushed. The item is much distorted. The body of the cross is covered with curling frond-like decoration. The fronds are organised in spiralling circles. A complete copper alloy probable awl dating to the Bronze Age period (c. 900-600 BC). The object is circular in section at its upper most point, widening at the middle and then narrowing to a square-sectioned and sharply pointed lower end. The circular sectioned and square sectioned ends are separated by a ridge below the widened middle. Comparable examples can be seen in Read (2001: 91) numbers 695 and 696. 696 in particular is closer in shape and has been suggested as a possible awl or a straw-splitter. An incomplete copper alloy sub-circular single-loop buckle dating to the Medieval period (c. AD 1200-1400). The buckle is D-shaped in plan and circular in cross-section. The buckle has a narrow off-set bar to which the strap or plate would once have been attached. The pin is no longer present. The object is undecorated and has a mid-green patina. Similar examples can be seen in Egan and Pritchard (2002: 66) nos 260 and 262. The overall dimensions are as follows: 34.92mm in legnth, 26.98mm in width, 8.24mm in thickness and 20.39g in weight.

A lead alloy cloth or bag seal stamped with a collection of images within a simple oval linear border. The imagery from left to right consists of: a lis, a decorative shield in 15th or 16th century style, with a possibly foliate device upon it, possibly over crossed sceptres and surmounted by a crown, with a feather and another unidentifiable object to the right. The reverse of the seal is blank. Circa 16th century.
