A medieval silver coin: a Scottish penny of William I (AD 1165 - 1214), third coinage (Short Cross and Stars), phase B, bust II (Spink S5029) dating from AD 1205 - 1230. Moneyers: Hue and Walter. Mint: Edinburgh, Perth or Roxburgh. The obverse legend is retrograde. Three six pointed stars and one with five points in each angle of the reverse. Reference: Spink, 2003, Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands, page 14, number 5029. It is 16.6mm in diameter and 0.8mm thick. It weighs 0.95gm.

Less than quarter of the coin survives, so identification is not at all certain, but it is possibly a penny of Edward the Elder (AD 899 - 924), Portrait type, moneyer Framwis. North (1994) Volume 1 number 651 on page 127. It is 10.2mm long, 8mm wide and 0.7mm thick. It weighs 0.23g.
