An incomplete medieval copper alloy strap end plate dating to the period c. AD 1250-1400. It is made from a single sheet of copper alloy that has been folded equally in two; a rounded section at the fold indicates where the plate would have fitted around a buckle frame. The plate is sub-rectangular in shape, viewed from the front or back and open-ended. There is a rivet hole in the centre of the plate, where a rivet (missing) would have secured the plate to a leather or textile strap. The plate has a grooved linear border on both sides. However, damage has reduced the plate considerab…

The strap end has two components, a long tapering shaft and a flat trapezoid which is the widest terminal and forms a '>' shape in profile, although one plate is only a trace. This terminal is abraded and is probably incomplete as the rivet holes are not visible. The shaft is sub-oval in section, and tapers to a slightly moulded probably zoomorphic terminal. The surface of the strap end is heavily abraded and the original surface has gone, therefore any potenital decoration is not visible. The strap end measures 44.28mm lon…
