Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete medieval gold ring. The bezel is formed of a dish shaped base with a crimped rim and raised claw-like collets. These hold a large red oval stone at the centre of the bezel. The hoop is plain and tapers in shape and size from the shoulders downwards. At the join between the shoulders and the bezel the hoop is narrower.
Analysis using Raman spectroscopy was also carried out on the red stone. The Raman spectra produced suggests that the stone analysed was a spinel.
