Copper alloy stirrup mount, as kindly identified by Rob Webley, who comments: 'This looks rather like it is from an 11th-century stirrup - either as a terminal or a collar mount. Plenty of examples on the database with which to compare'. Cast U-profile concavo-convex anthropomorphic mount, perhaps from the edge of a stirrup. The display face bears the image of a face or mask with prominently arched brows, hollows to either side of a central nasal ridge as eyes, and with a luxuriant horizontal moustache; the forehead and chin, the latter perhaps bearded, are formed by the upper …

A gold loop, possibly a bracelet, made from three strands of beaded wire that have been twisted together. Each strand has a diameter of approx. 1.0mm and the three together have a diameter of approx. 2.0mm. It appears that the terminal end of each strand was staggered so that the start and end of each length is spread around the loop. This would help to prevent the loop from unravelling. These joints are spaced approx. 9.9mm and 10.3mm apart. The loop has been squashed out of shape, currently having an irregular oval form. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface, un…

A fragment of a copper-alloy possible palstave of middle Bronze Age date (c. 1150-700 BC). Copper alloy harness pendant. Cast heater shield-shaped plate with an oval suspension loop at right angles to its display plane. The shield is charged with a lion rampant left against an enamelled field of an indeterminate tint, either black [sable] or dark blue [azure]; the tail of the lion may be forked. The colour of the lion, which was presumably a metal [i.e. silver/argent or gold/or] is uncertain. The lion or leopard [in or] was associated with England from the 13th century onwards, and [in argent] later with the Dukes of Norfolk. The loop is now open at its top. Suggested date:…

One half of an Early Saxon copper alloy wrist clasp with scalloped rear edge, four ring-and-dots, three attachment holes and ribbed front edge. Hines 1993, Form B18d. The central fixing hole is blocked with metal and the front edge is quite smooth. The absence of a scar from a hook or eye shows that miscasting led to this element being attached with solder, some of which fills the hole. The form and decoration is extremely close to one and a half pairs from Grave 52, Westgarth Gardens, Bury St Edmunds (West 1988, fig.77, D1 and D2). Length 13.7mm. Width 33mm. Weight 5.61g. Cast copper alloy harness fitting of Medieval date (1250-1400). The fitting is incomplete and represents only one broken element of a larger composite piece. The extant fragment is broadly rectangular in both plan and cross section. In design it is probably best described as a slotted bar which would originally have held a pivoting central spindle upon which enamelled and gilded harness pendants would have been displayed. Only one arm of this bar survives being broken across a pierced oval tab positioned at one edge. From this broken edge the bar tapers in both thickness and width bef…

Copper alloy brooch. Cast Colchester derivative or dolphin brooch, of an uncertain sub-type as it is now uncertain how a separate spring [probably of iron, and lost] had been retained. Plain curved concavo-convex wings are stained by rust on the reverse, with a central gap in this deposit which could relate to a lost hook - which could point to a variant upon the Mackreth type CD RH. They are met by a plain humped bow of rounded section, which tapers towards a plain foot with the stub of a catch plate behind it. Suggested date: Early Roman, 75-150. Late Saxon white-metal coated copper alloy oval strap slide in rather worn condition with an incomplete and distorted integral loop on the reverse. The flat front plate carries stylised zoomorphic, probably Borre-derived, decoration in counter-relief. At both ends there is a pair of confronted open-mouthed animal heads, and a double-strand saltire, with a low boss at its centre and all four ends projecting slightly from the edge, overlies a double-strand oval. A cast copper alloy fragment (tip section) of a socketed spearhead, dating from the mid to late Bronze Age c. 1500 - 800 BC. The socket is roughly sub oval in form and stops at 4 cm from the point.
