Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Copper alloy brooch. Cast Colchester derivative or dolphin brooch, of an uncertain sub-type as it is now uncertain how a separate spring [probably of iron, and lost] had been retained. Plain curved concavo-convex wings are stained by rust on the reverse, with a central gap in this deposit which could relate to a lost hook - which could point to a variant upon the Mackreth type CD RH. They are met by a plain humped bow of rounded section, which tapers towards a plain foot with the stub of a catch plate behind it. Suggested date: Early Roman, 75-150. Length: 47.9mm, Width: 29.8mm, Th…

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy and iron buckle. Cast D-shaped buckle frame of oval or lentoid section, with a narrowed round-section strap bar retaining an iron pin. Thre use of an iron pin may hint at a demanding role fulfilled by the buckle, perhaps fastening a sword belt or a lighter item of horse-gear. Under low magnification, it appears the iron pin may retain or preserve traces of textile. Suggested date: Medieval, 1200-1500. Length: 28.3mm, Height: 30.4mm, Thickness (frame): 3.5mm, Weight: 8.44gms

Copper alloy stirrup mount, as kindly identified by Rob Webley, who comments: 'This looks rather like it is from an 11th-century stirrup - either as a terminal or a collar mount. Plenty of examples on the database with which to compare'. Cast U-profile concavo-convex anthropomorphic mount, perhaps from the edge of a stirrup. The display face bears the image of a face or mask with prominently arched brows, hollows to either side of a central nasal ridge as eyes, and with a luxuriant horizontal moustache; the forehead and chin, the latter perhaps bearded, are formed by the upper …

The lion or leopard [in or] was associated with England from the 13th century onwards, and [in argent] later with the Dukes of Norfolk. The loop is now open at its top. Suggested date:…
