An irregular fragment of cast copper alloy plate of uncertain date. The fragment is broadly rectangular in plan and cross section. All edges are heavily eroded and abraded; they do not represent the original edges. The upper surface has a poorly preserved cast pattern comprising radiating elements between oval lentoid open loops. It has a deep green coloured surface patina. A direct parallel has not been found although it is highly likely that it is from the rim of a decorated metal dish - possibly a chafing dish of later medieval date (AD 1200 - 1600). The fragment measures: 33.…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative Polden Hill type brooch of Roman date (80-120 AD). The wings are near complete being semi-cylindrical in plan with flat and pierced end caps. The axis bar, spring and pin are lost. The spring was probably formed of copper alloy wire which was held in place by an external cord which is fixed to a horizontal groove like notch on the head of the brooch; there is no evidence of a rearward facing hook positioned at the midpoint on the upper edge of the reverse. The head of the brooch bow is hump like - being a very flat comma shaped in …
