The mount is an almost flat plate, very slightly D-shaped in cross-section with the obvserse slightly convex, and lozenge-shaped in plan, with bevelled edges. The front of the plate is so worn that any decoration that may have been present is now no longer visible due to mud and corrosion There is an integral rivet present on the mount located centrally on the reverse; this is bent over in line with the longer axis in the direction of an end point and ends in a blunt point. Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part of a post-medieval copper-alloy, probably sub-rectangular shoe buckle dating to the period c.AD 1660-1720. Two adjoining sides of the frame remain, consisting of one complete end and circa three-quarters of a longer side. The side has a drilled hole through its centre to hold a separate spindle; this is now full of brown corrosion products. This spindle, along with the pin, stud chape and tongue are all lost. The buckle is curved along its length, suggesting a shoe buckle rather than one used for breeches (though the size is consistent with either usage). There has been damage…

A Post Medieval lead alloy button dating to the period c.AD 1600-1700. The button is discoidal or slightly hexagonal, with an integrally cast shank projecting from the reverse but now broken c2mm from its base. The front is slightly convex and the back probably originally flat, though the button has been bent at some point such that the back is partially slightly concave.
