Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Dorset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete polished stone axehead, probably of Langdale Tuff. The axehead has an asymmetrical break at the butt end. The surface of the axe is granular but smooth with a distinct grey-green hue. The surfaces are finely polished with striations visible and very little visible of any flaking scars from the rough-out stage of manufacture. The object is sub-rectangular and tapers toward the butt and has a pointed oval section. The blade end tapers out to the side and in along the blade edge. The cutting edge is asymmetrical and has a large flake missing, probably post dep…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint fabricator. Bifacially flaked and elongate in shape with an oval section. The object tapers from a rounded end to a smaller more pointed end. The larger end retains cortex, this also covers around one third of one face. The flaking is covering, scaled and low angle. The flint is opaque, light beige with a low-gloss patina, now covered in a layer of off-white chalky re-cortification. Dr Kevin Leahy states 'fabricators are difficult to date and a wide range must be suggested.' Date: Early Mesolthic to late Bronze Age 10000 BC to 800 BC. Dimensions: 99.2mm x 11.31mm x 19.2mm. …

There are areas of thick, off-white nodule cortex reatined on the dorsal face towards the tip and at the butt. The ventral face has several large transverse thinning flake removals from the side edges. The dorsal face is more crudely worked with fewer flakes, also from the side edges. The tip of the knife has also been bifacially worked. The knife has an asymmetrical lentoid profile, deeper on the dorsal face. Date: Neolithic - c. 4000 - 250 BC Dimensions: 81 mm x 42.6 mm

A flaked flint axehead. The flint is mottled mid grey and grey brown with a low-gloss patina. A small area of off-white nodule cortex remains on one face. There is some iron staining along the flake ridges. Sub-trapezoidal in shape with a rounded, tapered but and a shallow convex cutting edge. It has been crudely bifacially flaked, producing an asymmetrical cutting edge. One face is more crudely worked than the other, with a large, irregular hinge fracture and several flake removal scars from the side edges.. A large fabricator or axehead roughout. It is elongate in shape with a rounded distal end and rectilinear proximal end. The cross section is plano convex. The flint is covered in a thin, smooth layer of off-white cortification. Patches of thick nodular cortex remain along the right side and distal end of the dorsal face with a thinner orangey sub-layer of cortification in between patches and covering the whole of the ventral face. Low angle flaking to the upper face is crude with many scars terminating in hinge fractures. The ventral face is flat. Date: Late Neolithic to early Bronz…

Flake 1: A secondary flint flake. It is sub-oval in shape. The flint is opaque and now completely covered in a layer of smooth blue-white re-cortification giving a mid-gloss patina, areas of modern damage reveal the light beige natural colour of the flint. An area of reddish brown ferrous staining is visible in the centre of the dorsal face. Minimal areas of cortex remain on some margins. The dorsal face shows broad flake removal scars. The ventral face shows a fairly prominent bulb of percussion with large bulbar scar and rippling indicating probable use of a hard hammer. Date: Late…

A secondary retouched flint flake. It is sub-triangular in shape. The flint is semi-translucent, dark mottled brown with a mid-gloss patina, some areas show a very thin, blue-white speckled re-cortification. Thick chalky cortex remains on three small areas of the dorsal face. The dorsal face shows broad flake removal scars and short, scaled semi-abrupt retouch along the straight edge of the proximal end, evidence of possible opportunistic use of the chiseled feature as a scraper. The ventral face shows a fairly prominent bulb of percussion with large bulbar scar indicating probable us…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Dorset

2018 T8 I have examined a group of 22 coins reported found in Dorset. All of the coins are official silver issues of the English monarchs Elizabeth I, James I and Charles I and will therefore be of over 90% fine silver. A detailed catalogue accompanies this report. There are two denominations present: the halfcrown and shilling. The face value of the coins in the 17th century was £1 6s 6d, easily a month's pay for a labourer at the time and several week's wages for a soldier in the Civil War. The coins represent what we know about the currency of the mid-17th century,…
