Description: The object is fragmentary surviving as a shank roughly D-shaped in cross-section. at one complete end is a large rectangular loop (now highly warped and squashed). A fragmented Roman hair pin possibly of 1st-2nd century AD. Description: The pin has a median length tapering shank which has snapped just after a swelling collar. The head is roughly globular with a slight indent between the head and the shank by a wide flat swollen collar. The break between collar and shank has occurred in antiquity although perhaps not as old as the loss of the pin. Measurements: 79.86mm, 7.95mm (wide at the head, diameter) and 5.25g in weight.

Incomplete lead-alloy button of medieval date (c. 1300 - 1400 AD). The button is domed. It is decorated on the domed face with a moulded weave design and finished with a central circular knop. A casting seam is visible across the back face, as well as the worn stump of an integrally-cast attachment loop, now missing. The object is 15.72mm in diameter, 7.26mm in thickness and weighs 4.79g. A similar example can be seen in Bailey (2004) Buttons and Fasteners 500BC-AD1840, p. 19, fig. 6.7, where it is dated to the 14th- 15th century.

There are two rivet holes spaced along its centre line. The object measures 47.6mm in length, has a width of 20.2mm, the body is 1.8mm thick, and the stem of the hook 3.56mm in diameter.

Circumstances of discovery: The 'near Cookley' hoard was discovered on the 19th of August 2018 by Mr [name redacted], metal detecting on a cultivated field with the landowner's permission. He initially discovered 12 silver denarii, and on returning to the field the next day dug out another 48 from some depth- apparently around 18 inches. The initial finds were spread 'a few yards', but those recovered deeper appear to have been unfortunately dug out of an archaeological context. It consists of a flat, rectangular strip, originally bent into a penannular form, but now bent out of shape. Each terminal exhibits three punched double-teardrops, each with three pellets in the centre, bordered above and below by a sunken horizontal cabled ridge. The band is decorated by a central groove bordered by a ridge on either side and in turn bordered by a sunken cabled ridge. A complete probable Bronze Age flint scraper (c. 3500 BC - 800 BC). This implement is made on a primary flake. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are apparent on the ventral face. A small number of bulb scars are also visible. The dorsal face is partially covered with a light brown cortex. There are signs of retouching arlong the distal and medial edges. The removals are mainly long, scaled and low angled. The overall dimensions are as follows: 30.07mm in length, 20.75mm in width, 13mm in thickness and 8.63g in weight.

Copper alloy strap end. A short strap end made by folding sheet metal of thickness 0.5mm lengthways, with subsequent trimming of one end to a rounded point. The display face bears an incised saltire over three lines at the inner edge. A rivet of diameter 2.2mm and length 3.5mm attached the inner ends of the folded plate to each other. Material trapped between the plates may be degraded leather preserved by its proximity to copper alloy, and should not be casually investigated. Suggested date: Medieval, 1270-1400. A square double-sided coin-weight made in Antwerp for checking the gold noble. The obverse depicts a ship with 'h' (for Henry) in the left upper field. The reverse depicts a hand, indicating that the weight was made in Antwerp. The hand divides the issuer's initials 'R' and 'I' with a 'V' (for van) centrally beneath the hand. The name of the issuer is unknown. Slightly above to the right and left of the hand are two numerals 8 and 0 indicating the issue date as 1580. At 6.7 grams (= 103.4 grains), it is close to the official standard weight of 108 grains.
