Cast copper alloy strap end front plate missing the back plate with bent sides in the form of a shield in plan with a lobed knop extension at the terminal end. The face plate is incised with the letters IHS with a line above that follows the form of the knopped end and oblique scrolled lines below that appear to form letters or numbers, but are too corroded to make out. All this is within an incised border which follows the edge of the plate. The letters "IHS" are a 'Christogram' (a monogram of the Holy Name), derived from the Greek word 'IHSOUS' (ΙΗ&…

Object type: FLESH HOOK
Broad period: MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy handle for a tool or kitchen implement, probably something like a skimmer which used to collect solid foods from stews. It consists of a flat piece of sheet metal rounded at the broken end to form a socket and flattened at the other end to form a thumb grip with a perforation that is 3 mm in diameter in the centre of the rounded terminal, probably for suspension near the fire. Past the thumb grip the metal is bent round into a tube, now spilt open and bent, with the end of the object broken off. The diameter of the tube is approximately 12 mm, but it may have opened up …

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall

Half of a copper alloy spectacle buckle, with one loop of the buckle broken off. Flat in section, the buckle has a simple stylised design of a rosette cast in low relief at each end of the strap bar and in the centre of the outer edge of the remaining loop and a triangular knop midway along either side of the loop and at the end of the buckle. The buckle has patches of tinning remaining on the surface. Whitehead (1996) illustrates a very similar buckle on page 66, no.410 which is dated from c.1550-1650.

Cast copper alloy skillet foot, rectangular in plan and plano-convex in profile and section. The fragment has parallel sides and is slightly thickened at the foot end, which is damaged and worn. There is a slightly raised central rib on the convex outer face, ending at the worn edge of the foot. The broken upper edge is slightly flared probably from when it was sheared off of the rest of the leg. On the front and back of the foot there are patches of black organic material that have been burnt on when the leg was near the fire. Butler and Green (2003) illustrate a skillet, manufact…

A cast copper alloy Post-medieval asymmetrical strap fitting dating from c.1600-1700. The mount consists of a convex cordate (heart-shaped) plate which is surmounted by a fleur-de-lys shaped terminal consisting of two lobes flanking a central elongated knop. Either lobe features an off centre circular aperture that is 3 mm in diameter. The reverse is concave, with the stubs of two integral pointed lugs projecting from the reverse to a height of 2 mm, each seated on a small round blob of metal. The overall shape of the mount is reminiscent of the Merovingian bee motif, where the heart …

Silver one real of Ferdinand V and Isabella I of Spain, from the reign of the Reyes Catolicos (1469-1504), when they were both rulers of Aragon and Castille (1479-1504). The coin is missing its legends and slightly bent, but at the base of the shield is a pomegranate of Granada on the obverse and the letter 'G' under the yoke on the reverse, signifying the mint of Granada, similar to a real listed by Cayon (2005) on p.427, no.2655, which dates from 1497. Similar coins on the database are recorded in CORN-086AE4, WILT-8D37C4, ESS-B9DB11 and IOW-25EE66.
