Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a cast lead-alloy pilgrim's badge, dating to the medieval period c. AD13th to 15th century. The fragment consists of a small oval lead alloy. On one side is a bearded face and on the other cross hatching. The fragment is very small, measuring only 15.17mm x 12.02mm; it seems likely that this object has been cut down from the original, maybe after the original broke, with the face of the man purposefully selected. The man may represent St Paul (probably) or possibly St John.

A cast and worked copper alloy object, possibly a Roman stylus c. 100 - 400 AD. Broadly round in cross-section, the stem tapers from the centre to both ends. One end then broadens to a roughly shaped hexagonal knop. The knop has an abrupt shoulder edge that reduces the diameter and forms into a 'screwdriver blade' tapering end. The tip of that end is broken. At the opposite end, the central cross section taper begins to enlarge, giving it a comfortable 'pen like' hold. That then has an abrupt shoulder, from which a modest point emerges. That 'point' has file marks, indicative of it ha…
