An incomplete copper-alloy Roman knife handle c. 50 - 400 AD. This is an example of the openwork 'hare and hound' series of folding-knife handles, an example of which has been found in excavations at Richborough, Kent (Bushe-Fox; 1949; pp.129). The design is three-dimensional and depicts a stylised hound and hare in the chase. There is a well-defined longitudinal slot of the blade at the base. This example has been damaged, with the fulcrum for the blade missing and the form is then bent and broken with a clean mid-green patina.

A cast copper alloy Anglo Saxon (early medieval) strap end c. 750 - 900 AD. The front face has a decorated panel bounded by a double grove. There is then the typical snout and eye form to the terminal. A section of the front plate is missing at the fixing end, broken along what may have been the rear edge of the decorative panel. Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead alloy object in the form of a pyramid with the vague impression of having an octagonal base/sides. Of uncertain date and use, this object could be dated from the Roman period, to the post medieval. Found in proximity to an early medieval find, it may fit that period. As to use, it may be a simple weight or perhaps, a gaming piece. There is no visible decoration and the base has a modestly domed form which may give support to the notion of a gaming piece, being easily moved on a gaming surface.. The surface has encrusted oxidation and surface 'crazing'.

A cast and incised decorated, copper alloy figural mount or pommel of probable post-medieval date. The mount has the form of a draped bust of a probable female, with hands clasped to the front. The head appears to be adorned with an elaborate hair do. The figure has been cast but then extensively incised to reveal a more realistic figure to the front, but the rear simply has a deeply incised cross hatched pattern. There is a clear break point at the foot and as such, its use may be surmised to have been the knop to an accessory, such as a hairpin. Although this item was found near som…
