Broad period: IRON AGE
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Iron Age to Early Roman (100BC - AD100) copper alloy strap union/junction, similar to SUSS-F35BF5, which can therefore be broadly ascribed to Taylor and Brailsford's Type 4 classification. Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Rotherham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A steelyard weight of possible Roman date, about AD 43 - 410. It is a globular piece of lead with iron projecting at one end. The iron forms a broken suspension loop. Roman steelyard weights are usually biconical, but weights of other shapes may also be Roman, though the steelyard was also used in the Medieval and Post Medieval periods. The lead has a white patina and is pitted. It is 47.9mm diameter, 44.3mm tall and 463g. Allowing for corrosion having caused some loss of mass, and the incomplete suspension loop, this could be intended to be 1 and a half Roman libra (c.492g). However,…

Object type: INGOT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Rotherham
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A lead ingot of uncertain date, probably Post Medieval to Modern, AD 1700 - 1950. It is a flat rectangular ingot with anged sides making it a trapezoidal prism. The corners are slightly rounded and ther are several circular concave marks on the top face, several overlapping. The metal is slate grey in colour, with little to no evidence of patination. The ingot is 76.2mm long, 46.1mm wide and 14.4mm thick. It is a 461g. This just over a Modern pound, and it was probably intended to be a pound of lead. This suggests a Medieval date or later, and the condition of the metal suggests a Pos…

The flake is 70.6mm long, 37.4mm wide and 11.5mm thick. 36.8g.
