A cast copper alloy double-loop buckle with trapezoidal frame. The buckle is 35 mm long and 22 mm wide and 2.6 mm thick. The frame has trefoil outer edges and small worn knops at each end of the strap bar which is bevelled and 2.7 mm wide but flush with the frame. The inner edges of both ends of the frame are vertical and the faces are decorated with an incised transverse line. The outer edges of the frame have central pointed knops with transverse grooves as pin rests and ovoid knops at the corners. An incomplete Post-Medieval cast copper alloy plate of a double loop shoe or knee buckle, dating to AD 1660 to 1720. The chape is D-shape with the centre of the curve projecting into an elongated knop which would have a raised stud at the end, now missing. It measures 20.0 mm in length and 11.8 mm in width where holds a copper alloy strap bar in situ. The pin is now missing but it was probably made of iron, as suggest traces of iron corrosion around the bar, on both sides of the plate. The reverse is plain. Fragment of a copper-alloy buckle of Roman date, Hawkes and Dunning type IIB, dating to the later Roman period, c. AD 250 - 400. The remaining portion of the buckle shows a partial loop and frame cast integrally. There is openwork design present on the frame in the form of circular holes, underneath which there are rectangular voids. A complete, medieval, copper alloy locking buckle (c. 1350-1450). It has a separate centre bar which extends outside the rectangular frame on one side and curves around to form a finger bar which terminates in a spherical knob. The frame has characteristic flanged sides which are drilled to recieve the bar over which the spindle is fixed. Notched pin groove, with a transverse groove along the front edge of the frame, into which the arm could be locked. This edge of the frame is deeper than the other. A copper-alloy single-looped buckle frame of medieval date, about AD1250-1400. The loop is D shaped with an expanded outer edge, and a projecting knop at the apex. The knop is biconcave on the outer edge. The strap bar is offset but missing, as is the pin and plate. The object has a dark greem patina with some exposed metal which is reddish in colour. Similar examples can be found illustrated in Whitehead (1996, 24; 107ff.). Whitehead suggests that these buckles date from the 13th and 14th centuries. A Medieval buckle dating from about AD 1200 - 1500. It is a single loop D shaped buckle with an ornate outer edge. The bar is recessed. The sides and the outer edge are moulded into seven slightly pointed lobes with cusps between them, the central lobe acting as the pin rest. There is no similar buckle in the Meols Catalogue or Egan and Pritchard, but the style is very similar to the bows on som Medieval keys, and on arched pendant mounts such as those on page 223 of Egan and Pritichard which are from contexts dated AD 1350 - 1450. A probable Medieval buckle fragment dating from AD 1250 - 1350. Only part of the outer edge and part of one side of the buckle survives. It would have been D shaped or pentagonal and is similar to a Meols type 6 buckle (page 84 and 91). The outer edge is expanded into a wide, stright edge, but unlike Meols Type 6, there are no grooves across the extension. The buckle is 12.7mm long, 23.9mm wide and 2.7mm thick. 2.6g. The metal has a green a speckled black patina.
