They could have been used for attahment, but are too big to be riv…

An iron unidentified object of uncertain date, AD 43 - 1950. It is probably made of wrought iron as it has the appearance of grain, like wood does. It is a bar which is circular in section at one end, but which quickly flattens out to a thinner rectangular cross-section. At the other end, one side curves inwards producing a knife like shape with a flat back and a pointed tip. This object is not identified as a knife however, because the curved edge is as uniformally thick (about 3.5mm) as the straight back, so there is no cutting edge, though the whole object does taper towards the cu…

A cast lead probable musket ball of Post-Medieval date, about AD 1600 - 1800. The casting seam and the remains of a casting sprue can be seen; it has been trimmed with nippers, leaving two facets. The two opposing faces furthest away from the casting seam have a circular groove on each. These seem to be integral mouldings. There are also radiating cracks in the patina. The shape may be the result of having been moulded in a poorly shaped mould. The shot is 12.9mm in diameter and weighs 10.6g, suggesting that it was intended for use in a pistol (Harding D F, 2012, Lead Shot of the Engl…

A fragment of a Medieval or Post Medieval copper-alloy purse bar dating from About AD 1440-1600. It falls into Williams Class A1. It has a double-strand lattice pattern formed of grooves filled with well preserved niello. Both ends of the arm are old, patinated breaks, but there is a suggestion of a constriction at one end, which is where the frame would have articulared before the bar would have terminate…

A decorated lead spindle whorl, probably of Medieval to Post Medieval date, about AD 1100 - 1600. It is flattened bi-conical in form (biconvex), with a wide median band (Walton Rogers Form C2). Both faces show traces of a cast design consisting of raised pellets and lines. The central aperture is 9.2mm diameter. The whorl has a light grey patina. It is 27.8mm in diameter and 9.1mm thick. It weighs 30.2g. Walton Rogers (in the Flixborough volume and York Fasicules) suggests that biconical whorls date from AD 1100 onwards and cites Ivens et al (1995) that those with dots are Post Medieval.
