Copper alloy coin. Possibly an as or dupondius of an indeterminate early Roman ruler; no clear detail discerned on either side, and fiercely worn and abraded. The magnified view prepared to illustrate this record may show traces of a radiate crown, which would point to the coin being a worn dupondius. Suggested date: Early Roman, 43-200. Lead pipe. A short length of a pipe with thick wall and a central channel of diameter 10.2mm; patinated. One end is slightly bevelled and perhaps slightly splayed, perhaps suggesting a particular and localised function for the object; its construction appearing too heavy for it to be an offcut from a water pipe. Patinated overall and dented or lightly gouged at one [the splayed] end. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1900. Length: 34.9mm, Diameter: 22.7mm, Thickness (wall): 8.8mm, Weight: 112.28gms

Copper alloy badge. Pressed metal cap badge of the Royal Tank Regiment. A male Mark I tank driving left within a crowned laurel wreath; motto below on scroll reads FEAR NAUGHT. The detail of the badge appears reversed on the back, where a drawn wire attachment loop remains. The Regiment was formed in 1916 as the senior armoured formation of the British army. Peter Hart kindly comments as follows: 'This is the third pattern Tank Corps badge being approved in 1922. The first and second patterns showed the tank facing right but when it was discovered that on the coloured field service c…

Lead shot. Cast rifle ball with a circumferential belt to engage with the rifling grooves in the gun barrel. Impressed or stamped damage appears in a limited patch; patinated. The distinctive form of the shot is associated the Brunswick rifle, though this is for a sporting gun of lighter bore. The surface markings resemble those associated with a turn-off breech loading mechanism of the 17th and 18th centuries, though this shot is for a later type of gun. Lead possible spindle whorl. A cast plano-convex weight with a central moulded aperture of diameter 11.2mm on one side, though the aperture is nearly closed by a flow of lead due to miscasting, on the convex side, which is also rough in its surface texture. Shrinkage lines suggest it was cast in an open mould. Patinated. A deep nick resembling a tying notch also appears on the flat face, revealing grey metal, though this may have been emphasised or formed by damage at the time of discovery or shortly thereafter - similar marks appear inside the hole. Lead musket ball. Cast ball with a flattened patch at opposed ends, probably from its inclusion in a multiple load, while a flattened circumferential belt may arise from set up, an effect occurring at the instant of firing an unwadded projectile. The mass, at about one ounce, may suggest this to have been fired from a smoothbore muzzle loading firearm of military specification, perhaps a light musket, pistol or carbine.
