A fragment of a ceramic vessel of uncertain date, Roman to Modern, AD 43 - 1900. The shard is an unusual shape and damaged, but appears to be part of the rim and shoulder from a narrow necked vessel with a rounded body. The fabric is orange and hard, with a irregular texture and sparse inclusions of quartz and grit. At first glance the fragment looks like the edge of a tegula or tile, but there are sufficient curves to rule this out. The fragment is 39.7mm tall, 61.7mm wide and 20mm thick. 76.2g.

Lead possible bung or stopper. Cast slightly tapered cylindrical object with flat upper and lower sides and a moulded hole of diameter 6.4mm; patinated. The sides bear a graffito or scratched inscription made with a very thin point. Depending on which way up this is examined, it might read: CANIEA ending on a shield-shaped panel 'charged' with three straight strokes, or perhaps: MARIC[--] if inverted - other readings of these spidery characters are entirely possible, and it is uncertain whether they represent antique script or or childish scrawl.
