Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A near complete but worn and abraded flat lead non-heraldic personal seal matrix of Medieval date c.AD 1200-1350. Description: The matrix is flat and circular in plan and with an incomplete triangular lug at the top of the reverse side at the apex of a raised ridge. No evidence of a suspension hole remains in the usual longitudal position. There appears to be drilled hole at the apex of the seal where the lug meats the die face but as it doesn't appear to exit the lug or the matrix it is uncertain what purpose it served. The raised ridge is flanked by two decorative lozenges, qua…

Lead possible bung or stopper. Cast slightly tapered cylindrical object with flat upper and lower sides and a moulded hole of diameter 6.4mm; patinated. The sides bear a graffito or scratched inscription made with a very thin point. Depending on which way up this is examined, it might read: CANIEA ending on a shield-shaped panel 'charged' with three straight strokes, or perhaps: MARIC[--] if inverted - other readings of these spidery characters are entirely possible, and it is uncertain whether they represent antique script or or childish scrawl. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-19…

Lead shot. Cast ball with an indented surface arising from impact against a hard curving surface. The mass may suggest this to have been fired from a smoothbore muzzle loading firearm of military specification, perhaps a pistol or carbine. Unusually for this locally abundant object type, the ball lacks surface patina. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Diameter: 18.2mm, Weight: 21.90

A lead weight dating between Medieval and Post-Medieval period. The weight is flat and disc shaped. The top face of the weight has evidence of a design but it is too worn to identify. Lead shot. Cast cylindrical slug, with one end flattened by an oblique impact against a hard surface; patinated. This probably served as a supplementary load to increase the 'stopping power' of a round fired from a smoothbore muzzle loading firearm of military specification: probably a pistol to judge from the diameter of the slug. The use of specialised forms of shot was especially characteristic of the 17th century. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700. Diameter: 15.1mm, Length: 17.4mm, Weight: 30.96gms

Lead musket ball. Cast ball with a flattened patch [8.5mm square] possibly from use of a ramrod, and possibly with a broad and slightly flattened circumferential area arising from set up, a distorting effect occurring at the instant of firing. Patinated. The mass, at just over an ounce, may suggest this to have been fired from a smoothbore muzzle loading firearm of military specification. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. A cast lead musket ball, of Post-Medieval date, about AD 1600 - 1800. The casting seam and the remains of a circular casting sprue can be seen; it has been trimmed with a single cut from a knife. The shot is 12.5mm in diameter and weighs 11.3g, suggesting that it was intended for use in a pistol (Harding D F, 2012, Lead Shot of the English Civil War). It has a grey patina.
