Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead possible bung or stopper. Cast slightly tapered cylindrical object with flat upper and lower sides and a moulded hole of diameter 6.4mm; patinated. The sides bear a graffito or scratched inscription made with a very thin point. Depending on which way up this is examined, it might read: CANIEA ending on a shield-shaped panel 'charged' with three straight strokes, or perhaps: MARIC[--] if inverted - other readings of these spidery characters are entirely possible, and it is uncertain whether they represent antique script or or childish scrawl. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead alloy unidentified object. A cast round section rod or stem of diameter 3.1mm, with mould lines on opposite sides; broken at one end, and retaining a cylindrical terminal at the other, with the mould line continuing across its flat end. The terminal appears to have been equipped with flanges around its upper and lower edges, now partly lost. The stem is bent. A grey tint without patina may suggest a relatively recent date. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1900. Length (as found): 25.5mm, Diameter (at terminal, on flange): 7mm, Weight: 4.20gms

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy bell fragment. A small shard from the body of an open mouthed bell, of estimated diameter 60mm at its upper part, wider below. A pair of turning lines at its plain flared rim which may suggest it was finished on a lathe. A greyish cast may arise froim the inclusion of tin in the metal mix for its acoustic properties. The sharp fracture edges suggest this alloy proved particularly brittle - not, perhaps, ideal for a bell rung by percussion - contributing to its current sorry state. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Height: 41.4mm, Width: 37mm, Thickness: 2.8mm, …

Lead shot. Cast cylindrical slug, with one end flattened by an oblique impact against a hard surface; patinated. This probably served as a supplementary load to increase the 'stopping power' of a round fired from a smoothbore muzzle loading firearm of military specification: probably a pistol to judge from the diameter of the slug.
