Treasure case 2018 T796. Description: Two fragments of a cast copper alloy chape or scabbard end, dating to late bronze age or, early Iron age c. 1150 - 800 BC. The two remnants are of a short bronze sheath/chape with an approximate total remaining length of 14cm, complete examples are usually 20 to 30 cm long. It is probable that they belonged to swords and not, as their size may suggest, to daggers. This example has a simple mid-ridge with no further decoration nor edge ribbing. Almost square in plan, the sides are 12.8 by 13.5 mm, 3.5 mm in thickness and weighing 3.7 g or 57.1 grains. Copper-alloy sub-rectangular single-loop buckle, complete with pin, of medieval to post-medieval date (c. 1350 - 1600 AD). The buckle frame is long and thin, with concave long sides and convex short sides. The frame is unevenly square in section. One of the longer sides, which is slightly thicker than the others, has a copper-alloy pin coiled at one end around it. An incomplete Medieval copper-alloy harness pendant (c. 1150-c. 1300). The pendant has a worn through suspension loop which is 90° to the plane of the plate. The wavy edged plate is leaf-like or insect-like in form with ridges on the front that possibly represent veins. The reverse is plain. This pendant is drab green. The front has a raised backward-looking animal with the full four legs visible, a raised and upward curled tail and a neck with outer notches (mane looking). A complete Medieval copper-alloy book mount of Howsam type B.1.2 (c. 1150-c. 1300). This umbonate quatrefoil mount is domed at the front and largely concave on the reverse. It has four evenly spaced lugs situated at the base. Each lug has a circular rivet hole and one rivet, made of copper-alloy, remains in situ.
