Treasure case 2018 T796. Description: Two fragments of a cast copper alloy chape or scabbard end, dating to late bronze age or, early Iron age c. 1150 - 800 BC. The two remnants are of a short bronze sheath/chape with an approximate total remaining length of 14cm, complete examples are usually 20 to 30 cm long. It is probable that they belonged to swords and not, as their size may suggest, to daggers. This example has a simple mid-ridge with no further decoration nor edge ribbing. An incomplete Middle Bronze Age copper-alloy palstave (c. 1500 BC-c. 1150 BC). The blade and a small portion of the butt are missing. A break has occurred just below the stops. The septum, wings and stops survive. The septum has a maximum thickness of 8.6mm This palstave is corroded and green and has patches of a decayed dark green patina. The breaks are old. Length: 76.0mm; width at stops: 23.9mm; width at butt: 20.0mm; thickness at stops: 18.0mm. Weight: 139.14g.
