A possible attempt at a further engraving, though indistinct, is also present on the opposite surface. The addition of lettering on such a worn coin suggests its reuse as a love token. Coins of William III (AD 1694-1702) were commonly converted into love tokens and this example is roughly the right size for a fourpence (groat) of William III though no detail remains to confirm this attribution.
