A late Roman or early Medieval cast Copper alloy buckle plate of Hawkes and Dunning type IIa. The buckle plate would have been attached by a separate spindle through a fork arrangement. There is evidence of a scar from a break, centrally placed on the long face of the peltoid shaped item. Two wings of uneven size and shape, curl down towards the main body from the scar. Late roman buckle plates are normally attached to the strap via a number of rivets. However this example appears to have been attached by a pin fixed through three drilled holes. An incomplete copper-alloy buckle of medieval date, c.AD 1350 - 1400. The buckle is a double looped oval with expanded outer loops with straight edges. The expanded edges are decorated with four incised chevrons. The bar has a thick layer of copper and iron corrosion. The pin and plate no longer remain.
The metal has a dark brown patina and is worn. The buckle is 31.7mm long, 23mm wide, 8.5mm thick and weighs 5.7g.
Similar examples are illustrated in Whitehead, p.58 and are dated to circa AD 1350 - 1400.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy single looped D-shaped buckle frame of Early-Medieval to Medieval date, c. AD 1000-1200. The buckle has a narrowed and off-set strap bar. The outer edge of the frame is wide with a central incised pin recess on the top of the frame. The pin and strap are missing. The strap bar is worn where the pin would have attached. The ends of the frame are decorated with moulded zoomorphic terminals depicting animals biting either end of the strap bar. An incomplete copper-alloy Medieval buckle, dating to AD 1250-1400. It is part of a probable sub-rectangular buckle frame with an oval cross-section and a roller at the outside edge. The roller is now stuck to the recess of the frame; it bears a narrow groove along the median axis, probably for the missing pin. At the ends of the roller transverse tight grooves are visible. The same transverse grooves are visible along the surviving frame as well. The buckle is very abraded and worn.
