Gold annular brooch. A tiny but superbly finished annular brooch with a band of plano-convex section. The convex display side has a deeply incised and closely spaced chevron pattern around the entire band, conferring a vermiform effect. The chevrons are interrupted only by a constricted seat for a collared cast gold pin. The reverse of the band bears stamped letters, each set in an indented rectangular panel, and each formerly inlaid with a dark and contrasting material, perhaps niello. Fragment of a gold ingot or strip, rectangular in plan and lozenge-shaped in profile, raised into a lip on both of the edges of each face. The raised edges are created when the sides are hammered to keep the them parallel and control the shape before forming the ingot into an armlet or band or ribbon ornament. Both ends are flattened and flanged and have been sheared off with a blunt 'cold' chisel which has caused the ends to expand.
