Gold annular brooch. A tiny but superbly finished annular brooch with a band of plano-convex section. The convex display side has a deeply incised and closely spaced chevron pattern around the entire band, conferring a vermiform effect. The chevrons are interrupted only by a constricted seat for a collared cast gold pin. The reverse of the band bears stamped letters, each set in an indented rectangular panel, and each formerly inlaid with a dark and contrasting material, perhaps niello. Copper alloy seal matrix. Cast vesica-shaped or lentoid matrix with a low rib on the back with a suspension loop, now broken, towards one end. The matrix bears a central fleur de lis motif with a trefoil floret between the main and side petals, and with a crescent moon below its stalk and a mullet or six-pointed star to either side of the stalk. A plain slightly tapered tube, almost closed at its wider end with a hole of diameter 2.9mm set centrally, and open-ended at the other end, where its diameter is 9.3mm. A pair of small worn open lugs, much reduced by wear, lie towards the broader end. They spring from a mould line passing down both sides and the closed end. Probably an individually made piece or 'sport'. The ends of the strip are brazed together where they pass each other at one end of the object, though no fastening gear remains.
