Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy plate brooch of Roman date, c.AD 200-350, of the Glass Centre-boss type. The brooch is oval in plan with a raised oval rim around a recessed cell at its centre, which would have held the fragmentary coloured glass insert found in association with the brooch. The brooch is too worn to discern any incised or moulded decoration around its rim. The glass insert would probably have been conical in shape but has fractured along all planes of its outward-facing surface. A flat surface remains on what would have been the back of the insert and bears a green patina f…

Broad period: IRON AGE
County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy possible terret ring of uncertain type of Iron Age or early Roman date, c.200BC-AD50. The terret fragment is curved indicating a D-shaped or sub-circular shape and is oval in section. There are two integral oval knobs projecting from the outer curve of the terret. These could indicate that the terret is of the dropped-bar type, where the bar itself has broken away. However, the terret thins after one of the projections, possibly forming a bar, which suggests that the adjacent projection could be part of a collar and the second projection could be decorative,…

A fragment of a Medieval rotary key dating from about AD 1200 - 1500. Ony the bow survives. It is quatrefoil with projecting ridges in the angles between the lobes, and circular holes through each lobe. The hole in the outmost lob is larger than the others and worn, suggesting the key was suspended from this point. A hollow or depression in the centre of the bow is filled with concretion, though the cavity does not appears to extend through the bow into a hole. The lobe adjacent to the stem is broken and the stem and bit are missing. The key has a glossy green patina. It is 38.1mm lon…

A copper alloy hollow hemisphere, now somewhat flattened, possibly part of the pommel of a Post Medieval sword dating from about AD 1600 - 1750. There is damage around what was probably a hole or slot in the apex of the dome. The base of the hemisphere looks complete, but if it is part of a pommel, the lower half must have attached here. Both faces of the object are decorated with a pair of intertwined dolphins modelled in relief. Each pair face away from each other, with their noses touching their tails, the middle part of their bodies wrapped round each other. Though no close parall…
