Object type: LEASH
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy Medieval to Post Medieval swivel. Two oval loops, flattened and expanded at the axis where they touch. One of the loops has an integral central spindle bar that passes through a hole in the body of the second, where it is mushroomed over to secure it in place. The two loops still swivel freely against each other. Amongst other uses spindles were used on animal leashes and attachments such as purses. This example is plain and small in comparison to some Medieval examples and is probably late Medieval to Post Medieval in date. Circa AD1350-1650.

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk

Complete handaxe of Wymer's type D, of glossy black flint with few slightly lighter inclusions. The "blank" for this piece was a piece of a larger nodule of flint, much reduced in size by multiple thermal (frost) fractures, these are evident at the butt, on both faces, as this area is almost completely unworked and consequently is of irregular shape and quite thick. All flake removals are hard hammer struck and are only concentrated towards the point and the tip, it took few removals to produce this piece. The dorsal face remains cortical, leaving a strip of weathered, light grey cort…

Incomplete and unusual handaxe, of Wymer's type F? (Wymer. J. 1999), the point is broken in antiquity by a transverse bending fracture. It is slightly rolled with minor losses to the high points of the flake scars and the edges, but otherwise it is in fresh condition. Both faces are covered with hard hammer struck flake scars that overlap, the only trace of the original nodule of flint that this was worked from is a small thermally (frost) fractured area on the very …
