A copper alloy possible hanging bowl escutcheon, probably of medieval to post-medieval date. The object comprises three distinct parts but cast in one piece. At one end is a nearly rectangular plate. This plate decorated with inscised crescents along each long edge and two pairs of transverse parallel grooves at one end. At the opposite end of the plate, a curved rod (similar to the bow of a brooch) joins the rectangular plate to a smaller, D-shaped plate. The rod has a hexagonal cross-section and is undecorated. A copper-alloy fragment from the body of a cauldron. All of the edges are broken and uneven and the shallow curve of the wall suggests a large cauldron with a diameter of about 380 mm, that might hold about 7 gallons. The interior of the fragment is smooth and unencrusted. Much of the exterior is covered in a layer of burnt organic matter but has a very fine granular texture, suggesting a date of manufacture of the end of the 17th century, or later. Across the outer surface of fragment is a raised decorative band or 'wire' in the casting, that is 3 mm wide. Below this is an elo…

A fragment of the rim of a cast copper-alloy cooking vessel or cauldron. The edge of the rim is internally bevelled so that it is flush with the exterior but stepped on the interior, with a triangular profile, which is 7 mm thick before tapering to 4 mm below. The fragment has a layer of burnt black organic matter on the exterior, but a series of fine, parallel scratches at an angle of about 45 degrees to the rim cut through this layer, suggesting that they are post-deposition. The inner surface is smooth and flat, with some burnt organic matter trapped under the bevelled ridge that pr…

Object type: TRANSVERSE ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pale grey flint, possible oblique or transverse arrowhead fragment. A small flake with distinctively rippled flake removal scars on its dorsal side and with a bulb at one corner of its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect appears to have followed the edge of the object, but is mostly removed by subsequent impacts, probably adventitious and recent, as these interrupt a light patina arising from limited exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Possibly Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC. Length: 28.1mm, Width: 22mm, Thickness: 4mm, Weight: 3.21gms

Lead tag. A sub-triangular tag cut from cast lead sheet of a regular 2mm thickness, with a pierced round hole towards its apex and the stamped or incised numeral 64 on one side, in fairly modern style. Patinated. The finder kindly suggests this to be an ear tag from livestock: a rigorous numbering system should probably imply a post-war date. Suggested date: Modern, 1950-2000. A copper alloy strap slide dating to c.1150 to 1400. The slider consists of a single, trapezoidal loop with as curved outer edge. There are a pair of opposed internal triangular projections about a quarter of the way up the sides of the frame. The sides of the frame are rectangular in section apart from the longer upper edge which has a rounded top. Reference: Egan and Pritchard (1991: 234) illustrate a number of similar examples, including ref. 1265 which they assign to a late 12th to late 14th century date. They note that the type with internal projections are thought to be the ear…

A complete cast copper-alloy swivel, probably dating to the Medieval period. The swivel possesses two 'D-shaped' frames which are set back-to-back and joined at the centre. From the back of one frame there extends an integral arm at a right angle that is circular in cross-section. This arm extends through a corresponding perforation in the other frame. The end of the arm is flattened to secure it in place and create a loose rotary connection. The surfaces of the swivel are undecorated. The swivel measures 22mm in length, 15mm in width and 6mm thick. It weighs 3.48 grams.

A complete cast copper-alloy strap end dating to the Medieval period, c. 1250-1400. It consists of two plates connected at their upper edge and terminal by means of two circular-sectioned copper-alloy rivets, the latter surviving in-situ. In plan the strap end is broadly rectangular, tapering slightly at its lower section towards a tri-lobed flattened terminal. One face demonstrates the rather worn remains of engraved rocker-arm decoration in a single 'Z' shaped line. Medieval copper alloy composite strap end. The strap end is formed by two sheets of copper alloy riveted by a copper alloy rivet at both ends, with a third spacer element sandwiched inbetween. The strap end is sub-rectangular but tapers slightly along it's length to an abrupt trefoil terminal. The plate is decorated on one side only by two lines of rocker-arm work running obliquely across the width. A very small piece of leather was originally retained within the gap between the copper sheets but this has now become dislodged and disintegrated. Circa AD1250-1400.

A fragment of a circular copper alloy medieval seal matrix, 25.8mm across. Approximately half of the die face, which was originally circular, remains. A single circular suspension loop is present on the rear of the object. The design consists of the head of a figure presented in profile and facing left, with a stylised curl of hair and simply incised features. This figure is shown facing, to its left, the bit and part of the shaft of a large key which may be being held. The lower portion is lost. Dark grey opaque flint scraper. A sub-rectangular flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side by unidirectional working, and with a pronounced bulb at the butt end of the ventral surface. Short angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved end, though interrupted by more recent chips.
