Object type: BACKED BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint possible backed blade. A thick pointed flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by hard hammer, and with an undulating ventral surface. The removal of the smaller flake of two struck from the dorsal aspect may have afforded a flat surface enabling pressure to be brought to bear on a long convex cutting edge. The object is lightly and adventitiously chipped all around its edges, recently at its butt end. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 36.9mm, Width: 18.4mm, Thickness: 6mm, Weight: 4.12gms

Dark grey opaque flint scraper. A sub-rectangular flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side by unidirectional working, and with a pronounced bulb at the butt end of the ventral surface. Short angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved end, though interrupted by more recent chips. Unusually, the object does not bear surface patina, which may suggest it was deposited in an atypical and sealed context from which it has only recently been disturbed. A complete cast copper-alloy swivel, probably dating to the Medieval period. The swivel possesses two 'D-shaped' frames which are set back-to-back and joined at the centre. From the back of one frame there extends an integral arm at a right angle that is circular in cross-section. This arm extends through a corresponding perforation in the other frame. The end of the arm is flattened to secure it in place and create a loose rotary connection. The surfaces of the swivel are undecorated. The swivel measures 22mm in length, 15mm in width and 6mm thick. It weighs 3.48 grams.

Copper alloy mount. Cast bar-shaped mount with stout cylindrical integrally cast and flat-ended fixing pins of 3.7mm diameter projecting from behind each of its rounded ends, and with bevelled long edges. Probably a recent version of a bar mount or strap stiffener, a post-medieval date being suggested by the integral pins. The dimensions are very close to whole metric units, which might hint at a date after 1800, when Napoleon introduced the metric system to Continental Europe, and possibly to the European manufacture of the object. Copper alloy mount. Bar mount, as kindly identified by the finder with reference to Read's Metal Artefacts of Antiquity, page 23 no. 160. Cast straight-sided bar of plano-convex section with a drilled hole of diameter 1mm at either end, one retaining a rivet of length 3.5mm and diameter 1.3mm. The rivet was dislodged in the course of recording, and, as such tiny objects are seldom individually inspected, was separately weighed; it proved to weigh 0.04gms. Suggested date: Medieval, 1270-1450. Length: 16.6mm, Width: 3.8mm, Thickness (clear of rivet): 1.8mm, Weight: 0.68gms

Copper alloy nail head. A thin die-stamped sheet metal plate in the form of a cross fleury, with a central rounded boss or nail head with saltire-shaped indentation behind which the stub of a drawn wire shank of diameter 1.8mm projects. This is a variant on an object class more usually taking the form of a Cross of Jerusalem, or cross crosslet.
