A silver Roman denarius of Trajan (AD 96-117), dating to the period AD 103-111 (Reece period 5). PAX (in exergue), COS V P P S P Q R OPTIMO PRINC reverse type depicting Pax standing left holding cornucopia and setting fire to pile of arms. Mint of Rome. As RIC II, p. 251, no. 102. This coin has suffered from post-depositional damage resulting in the surface lifting away from the core in large areas of the flan. The visible metal beneath does not immediately suggest this coin is a plated copy, rather the damage may well be the result of exposure to heat or fire.
