Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark grey flint with cortex, scraper. A thick slug-shaped flake with cortex trimmed from one end of its dorsal side by short abrupt retouch. The ventral side is concave, and bears invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the ventral aspect, situated at the same end that was trimmed from the dorsal aspect. A thin misty patina in the ventral surface, but absent from the areas of dorsal retouch, may suggest the reuse or refreshing of a discarded tool which had endured limited exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC. Length: 41.2mm, Width:…

Grey flint with cortex scraper. A large oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by multangular hard hammer strike. The ventral surface is smooth and slightly concave. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a part of the curved edge, opposite either a striking platform or a flat butt. Misty patina has developed over all struck surfaces, suggesting the object has endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment after its deposition. Where this is interrupted, it is by slight adventitious impacts. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 …

Grey flint with reformed cortex, scraper. A small flake with broad flakes struck from the dorsal side to trim cortex, and with a bulbar and slightly concave ventral surface. A pale buff patina developed over the struck surface on the dorsal side, to be later interrupted by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect which follows a curved edge. This edge is itself interrupted by a more recent chip. Suggested date (embracing all episodes of working): Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 22.9mm, Width: 20.2mm, Thickness: 4.6mm, Weight: 2.72gms

Pale grey flint point fragment. A thin sub-triangular flake with covering angled scalar retouch across its dorsal side, and with a flat ventral surface with invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the ventral aspect along one long edge. The effect was to confer a thin lentoid section on the object as a whole. The narrower tip may have been broken in antiquity; the broader end either then or later. The finder kindly suggests this to be an oblique arrowhead. This reporter would rather see this as a fragment of a triangular or rhomboid point, again a late Neolithic category of objec…

Object type: TRANSVERSE ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pale grey flint, possible oblique or transverse arrowhead fragment. A small flake with distinctively rippled flake removal scars on its dorsal side and with a bulb at one corner of its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect appears to have followed the edge of the object, but is mostly removed by subsequent impacts, probably adventitious and recent, as these interrupt a light patina arising from limited exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Possibly Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC. Length: 28.1mm, Width: 22mm, Thickness: 4mm, Weight: 3.21gms

Grey flint possible backed blade. A thick pointed flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by hard hammer, and with an undulating ventral surface. The removal of the smaller flake of two struck from the dorsal aspect may have afforded a flat surface enabling pressure to be brought to bear on a long convex cutting edge. The object is lightly and adventitiously chipped all around its edges, recently at its butt end. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Dark grey opaque flint scraper. A sub-rectangular flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side by unidirectional working, and with a pronounced bulb at the butt end of the ventral surface. Short angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved end, though interrupted by more recent chips. Unusually, the object does not bear surface patina, which may suggest it was deposited in an atypical and sealed context from which it has only recently been disturbed. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500. Length: 44.3mm, Width: 33.6mm, Thi…
