Copper alloy cast champleve enamelled object probably a Roman buckle plate. The object has a rectangular body with an old transverse break at one end with a sub-triangular D-section broken projection, extending from the other. The break at the end of the projection curves inwards towards its centre suggesting it may have fractured across a hole at this point, however this cannot be confirmed. An incomplete copper-alloy variety of Trumpet, sometimes designated 'bow and fantail', brooch from the Roman period, c. AD 50-150.
The brooch is Mackreth type TR 4.1b1 (2011: vol 1 p126-7; vol 2 plate 86 no.5603 is the most similar).
The head and upper section of the bow is present but the 'fantail' foot is missing. The head has two tubular wings and, in the centre, half the remains of an attachment loop. The object takes the form of the goddess Minerva, represented three-dimensionally as a bust from the shoulders up. It takes the form of a goat with its head turned slightly to the right when viewed from above, the tail, beard, face and ears all rendered realistically-though the horns are broken away in old damage.
