Probably a fragment from one arm of a copper alloy spur of probable seventeenth century date. The remaining section of arm has a pointed oval cross section with more convex outer face. It is broken at both ends with old worn breaks and widens from one end towards the other. There are two knops spaced about 13mm from each other, which project from the external face, and are slighly off-centre, being to the left when viewed with the wider end at the bottom. One is c 10mm from the wider end, the other c 8mm from the narrower end. Both are circular and c 4.5mm in diameter and are unevenly…

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fifteen cast lead vessel repairs (pot mends). Twelve of them have the characteristic H-shaped section with two irregularly shaped outer sides, one larger than other, joined by a smaller central section. Three of them consists of only one side with a central plug projecting from the rear. Only one of them contains surviving ceramic material in the groove created between the outer sides, but it is too small to date. The lead vessel repairs weigh in total 226.86 g. Pot mends of this form are found in both Roman and Medieval periods, as a common way to repair broken pottery vessels. Th…

Object type: BULLET
Broad period: MODERN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fired modern lead bullet. The cast lead bullet was probably originally of domed or pointed form with a hollow base, now mostly melted. The point has been flattened and the lower part of the bullet rolled/compressed upwards. The length is 13.6mm and width 18.8mm. The width of the top of the object is 11.2mm, suggesting its use for perhaps a 0.45 inch calibre weapon. There are two circumferential lines visible. Weight: 14.3grams. The bullet has characteristics of the Minié ball, but a definite designation is not possible given its condition. This was a type of muzzle-loading…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead pump clack, which is part of a crude non-return valve from an old water pump; dated Post-medieval to Modern. The object is formed from a rectangle of lead, 61.5mm x 50.6mm, 7.5mm thick. Two corners of one of the shorter ends of the rectangle have been cut to remove about one-sixth of the longer sides and one-third of the shorter sides, giving the impression of a rough curve to that end. The two shorter sides have been bevelled, and the uncut shorter side has been further rolled back to the back side of the rectangle. In parallel to the rolled edge there is a raised ridg…

Object type: RIVET
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unknown cast lead object, possibly a hook, peg or rivet; alternatively it could have been used to mend a vessel or change its use. It comprises a sub-circular, slightly convex disc (but not uniformly so), and a shaft extending from the centre of the concave side of the disc. There is a small hole c 2mm in diameter, half way between the base of the shaft and the edge of the disc, and there are traces of another similar hole c 16mm away. The shaft is angled upwards from a line joining the two holes such that it make an internal angle of c 20 degrees with the upper side of the disc. T…

Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Roman bi-conical cast lead steelyard weight with rusted iron at the top and bottom ends indicating the original existence of suspension loops. One end is flattened at a slight angle, possibly indicating the loss of a small amount of lead. At the other end a pyramidal piece of iron protrudes c3mm from the lead. It is possible that an iron rod runs through the weight from end to end but this cannot be verified. The central ridge where the two conical ends meet is slightly rounded. There are no signs of decoration though there are several diagonal incisions on one of the cones; these are …
