~~Core rejuvenation flake that has four long thing removal scars, possibly from blades, each has a negative bulb of percussion at its top edge. On the reverse is a large bulb of percussion. The flint is covered in a creamy speckled grey patina. This is probably a core rejuvenation flake from the top of a blade/bladelet core.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint with grey cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast, burin, as kindly identified by the finder, who is informed on this point by the kind advice of Bill Bee. A thin sub-triangular flake with flakes removed from one side of the dorsal face by hard hammer strike, and with a bulb at one corner of the ventral side. Two long narrow parallel flakes were removed by pressure flaking from the dorsal aspect, defining one side of a tiny projecting point. The other side of the point is marked by very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect. Misty patina which has dev…

Grey flint backed blade. A trapezoid flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side by unidirectional hard hammer strike, and with a bulb at the broader end of the ventral surface. The cutting edge lies along the left hand long side of the object as it is viewed from its dorsal side, with the flat edge opposite permitting pressure to be brought to bear. A dense creamy patina indicates that the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment after its deposition. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 43.9mm, Width: 27mm, Th…

Grey-green flint scraper fragment. A now sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side by hard hammer strike; the ventral side appears to have been chipped with the removal of a possibly bulbar surface. Short angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect followed a curving edge; it appears likely that the working edge is truncated by a more recent break or breaks, and that further edge-chipping post-dates this damage. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 34.6mm, Width: 31.4mm, Thickness: 12.7mm, Weight: 16.42gms

Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint tranchet axehead. A thick oval flake with broad flakes removed from both sides by probably unidirectional hard hammer working; these included an angled blow removing a broad flake from one end, with localised evidence for light battering immediately adjacent. The resultant section is of an angular oval form. A dense buff patina suggests the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment, while extensive orange staining might point either to its incorporation in gravel or to the underlying tint of the flint - which is uncertain. The discolouration points to an …

Neolithic (Early) to Neolithic (Late) disc scraper, 33mm long, 33mm wide, 5mm thick and 9.3g in weight. Made on a rounded flake that has been worked centripetally into a disc by the application of semi-abrupt and in some parts abrupt retouch. The flint is opaque and has turned light grey through the process of patination. The butt is large and therefore the piece has been hard hammer struck. The left side has been notched, and the dorsal face possesses two parallel ridges created by unidirectional removals.

Flint plano convex knife. A short oval flat-ended pebble with a slightly bulbar ventral surface and with covering angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect. One end is now indented by the hard hammer removal of a flake. Scars on the ventral surface are from more recent adventitious damage. A creamy patina overall suggests the object has endured exposure to a calcareous environment after its deposition while orange spots point to its incorporation in gravels. Pale brown flint lithic implement. A thick long flake with long parallel narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with an undulating ventral surface with small bulb and platform at one end. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge and follows it round to a rounded end. Handling the object might suggest it was intended for a left-handed user, or as a combined scraper and serrated implement, the former appearing at the rounded end. Creamy patina suggests the object has endured exposure to a calcareous environment after its deposition. Suggested da…

Flint scraper. Oval flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral surface towards the butt. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved edge. A dense creamy patina with roughened areas suggests the object has endured long exposure to a calcareous environment. The finder kindly suggests the thickness and character of the coating may point to an earlier Mesolithic date. Neolithic (Early) to Bronze Age (Later) rounded flake, 51mm long, 34mm wide, 11mm thick and 23.1g in weight. Made on an opaque flint that has turned a mid brownish grey through patination. The proximal end possesses some cortex and the butt is facetted. The dorsal ridges and scars suggest bidirectional working with some orthogonal removals as well. Although the piece is quite rounded no retouch or other working has taken place after the piece was originally removed.

Made on flint that has turned opaque and mid to light grey in colour through the process of patination. The piecer has been made by abrupt and semi abrupt retouch applied to the distal end on both faces (bifacial working). The ventral face has been worked all over and the the butt has been abruptly retouched to creat a scraper edge. The dorsal face possesses a central ridge and the flake scars are the result of unidirectional flaking by hard hammer technique.
