An incomplete, worn, double struck and possibly clipped post-Medieval silver penny of Charles I (1625-1649). Initial marks: illegible. Inner circle on both sides, possibly Group D, possibly North 2271 (North 1991: 163, ref: 2271). Obverse: CAROLVS D G [ ]; Crowned bust left with I (mark of value) behind head. Reverse: [ ]IA.THROAT ('Justice strengthens the throne'); Oval garnished shield. Diameter: 13.4mm. Weight: 0.46g. The reverse is double struck. North, J.J. 1991. English Hammered Coinage, Volume II, Edward I to Charles II, 1272-1662. Spink & Son, London.
