Cast lead alloy or lead, perforated circular probable weight or spindle whorl of medieval to post-medieval date 1400 - 1800AD. The weight has a circular perforation. The weight has a series of raised lines along the circumference of both faces which differ. Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast lead alloy mount in the form of a flower. The flower head is plano-convex and deeply moulded; on the reverse of the flower head is a short neck which then expands into a broadly circular shaped, uneven disc-shaped plate. These objects have been classed as Roman military belt / harness mounts but many have been proven to be post-medieval tobacco or tea caddy or tea pot lid handles. As it is made of a lead alloy it is far more likely to be a post-medieval handle rather than a Roman fitting.
