A cast lead spindle whorl of an unknown date. The whorl is circular in shape and the top and bottom surfaces are flattened. Through the centre is a circle hole measuring 8.7mm in diameter. There is no visible decoration on the surface. The whorl has several breakages on one side. The way in which the breaks have occurred suggests that there would have been a high content of tin mixed into the lead before the whorl was cast. The whorl was found on a site that has produced Roman and post-medieval finds. There is a possibility of it being dated as Roman, however, more modern finds hav…

Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper alloy spear tip probably dating from the Bronze Age circa 1700-800BC. Only the tip of the spearhead remains, which is triangular in shape, and lozenge in cross section with a worn midrib. This is the tip of the spearhead only and has a pronounced spine running down its centre, this is flanked by thin blades that taper to a fine point. The rear of the spear is truncated resulting in the loss of the socket and rear section of the blades. The break is worn. An insufficient amount of the spear remains to prove diagnostic, therefore a specific type cannot be attributed.

Grey-green stone possible muller. A rounded possibly water-rolled pebble with a dull and speckled surface appearance, possibly with worn and in one case slightly concave faces, well-adapted to hold in the hand. This object was recovered as distinctively different from the local stones, and as such is probably a manuport [i.e. brought to the site by human agency]. Such stones might be retrieved as glacial erratics, and lent themselves to uses as rubbers, grinders and burnishers. They are noted particularly from contexts between the Iron Age and the Early Medieval period, though as a fi…
