Date: Medieval circa AD 1300-1400 Discovery: club dig on cultivated land. Description: An incomplete silver-gilt annular brooch. The brooch is sub-square in plan and flat in profile. The corners are inset giving the brooch the appearance of an openwork cross or squared quatrefoil. A constriction for the pin is clear on one side, however the pin is now missing. The object has been broken into three separate parts and some of the breaks have been bent, though all clearly fit together to form the whole brooch frame. A copper-alloy pin dating to the Roman period. The pin consists of a circular-section stem which at one end is decorated with a 9mm section of horizontal grooves which create the head. At the other end, the stem tapers to a point. The stem of the pin is bent and split approximately 12mm underneath the grooved decoration at just over a 90 degree angle. The pin measures 66mm in length and 3mm in maximum diameter. It weighs 2.77 grams.
