Cast copper alloy mount of probable late medieval or post medieval date (1400-1600). The mount is sub-oval in plan and domed in cross section (D-shaped). The front face is convex and undecorated. The reverse is concave. From a central position a small square sectioned spike projects; thisterminates in a blunnt tapered point. The spike measures 2.2mm x 1.9mm and projects 14.5mm. The mount is a dark mid green colour with a patchy surface patina. The length of the spike would suggest that this mount was used either in a piece of furniture or through a relatively thick piece of leather, p…

A broken fragment from a cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is broken on its upper edge - the extant fragment is sub-triangular from which descends an oval shaped knopped terminal. In profile it is D shaped and the long edges are all bevelled. From the lower face / reverse face a single small hook / integrally cast spike projects. The fitting is a mid-green colour with a well preserved patina . Similar examples of strap fittings can be seen in Brian Read's book 'Metal Artefacts of Antiquity' (pages 34-37). The …

A cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is irregular in plan being broadly triangular in shape and rectangular in profile; the edges are bevelled. The overall decorative design could be described as phallic comprising two circular elements from which emerges a longer pointed oval shaped central part. From the lower face / reverse face two small hooks / integrally cast spikes project. The remains of a friable black leather are preserved on these hooks. The fitting is a much abraded mid brown colour with a poorly prese…

Folded and cut sheet metal strap fitting from a medieval buckle (AD 1250-1650). The fitting is rectangular in plan being formed from a single sheet - which is folded at the midpoint around teh axis bar of a medieval buckle. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small fragment from a cast copper-alloy probable 'Winchester style' strap end of later Early Medieval (10th - 11th century) date. The strap end is incomplete and the upper and lower parts are lost. The damage appears to be old as the breaks are either corroded or patinated. Originally the strap end would have been rectangular (tongue shaped) with a rounded base and riveted attachment plate; what remains is the junction between strap and body of the plate. The remains of a single iron rivet is present on the bifurcated strap plate whilst the upper part of the decorated pierced is ext…

A cast copper alloy 'signet' finger ring with an incised / engraved seal matrix bezel of probable very late medieval or early post medieval date (AD 1400 - 1600). The hoop of the finger ring is incomplete and distorted - approximately 60% of the ring is complete. Originally it would have been an irregular D shape - often called stirrup-like in plan and the hoop has an angular D shaped cross section. The hoop flares (expands) toward the front and the shoulders of the ring have distinct angular expanded facets. The bezel is formed on a horizontal platform into which the design is incis…
