Cast copper alloy fragment from a strap fitting / belt mount of post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is irregular in plan having a semi-circular plate at the base from which emergeces a rectangular element which tapers and expands along its length. The sides are bevelled and there is no cast, applied or incised decoration. The reverse of the fitting is plain and undecorated - two projecting hooks extend from the median line both are folded back upon themselves and broken; these would have passed through the leather of the belt and have been folded back to secure it in pla…

A cast copper alloy strap fitting (belt mount) of probable post-medieval date (1500-1700). The strap fitting is irregular in plan being broadly triangular in shape and rectangular in profile; the edges are bevelled. The overall decorative design could be described as phallic comprising two circular elements from which emerges a longer pointed oval shaped central part. From the lower face / reverse face two small hooks / integrally cast spikes project. The remains of a friable black leather are preserved on these hooks. The fitting is a much abraded mid brown colour with a poorly prese…

Folded and cut sheet metal strap fitting from a medieval buckle (AD 1250-1650). The fitting is rectangular in plan being formed from a single sheet - which is folded at the midpoint around teh axis bar of a medieval buckle. A single rectangular tab has been removed at this end and this would have allowed for the pin. A single ironrivet held the plate together at the opposing terminal - which has been rounded. . The buckle plate is undecorated and is a mid green colour with well formed surface patina. The plate measures 30.2mm length, 9.8mm width, is 3.4mm thick (the folded plate is…

Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small fragment from a cast copper-alloy probable 'Winchester style' strap end of later Early Medieval (10th - 11th century) date. The strap end is incomplete and the upper and lower parts are lost. The damage appears to be old as the breaks are either corroded or patinated. Originally the strap end would have been rectangular (tongue shaped) with a rounded base and riveted attachment plate; what remains is the junction between strap and body of the plate. The remains of a single iron rivet is present on the bifurcated strap plate whilst the upper part of the decorated pierced is ext…

A cast copper alloy 'signet' finger ring with an incised / engraved seal matrix bezel of probable very late medieval or early post medieval date (AD 1400 - 1600). The hoop of the finger ring is incomplete and distorted - approximately 60% of the ring is complete. Originally it would have been an irregular D shape - often called stirrup-like in plan and the hoop has an angular D shaped cross section. The hoop flares (expands) toward the front and the shoulders of the ring have distinct angular expanded facets. The bezel is formed on a horizontal platform into which the design is incis…
