A rather worn Roman copper-alloy rectangular mount, or perhaps knife handle, with red enamel decoration. Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A post-medieval (c.1600-1900) cast lead alloy possible palm guard for use by a leather worker or sail maker to protect the palm whilst stitching. The shape of this example (oval, and thicker to one long edge than the other) suggests it may have solidifed in a shell. The underside is flat with an off-centre raised ring; to the opposite face this is at the centre of a wider (and more roughly shaped) circular depression. This other surface is smooth and contoured with a rough area to one end, presumably as a result of bubbles forming during the solidifying process. The object measu…

The metal is badly pitted and little original patina remains. The socket-end is worn and damaged and measures 10.2mm wide and 10.8mm tall (internal 7.5x8.1mm). To one face, just above the socket-end where the patina is retained, are two sections of parallel line. Possible traces of linear decoration on corresponding worn areas at this point suggest these might have been a pair of decorative concentric grooves. Above, the loops extend t…
