Lead possible weight. Cast plano-convex weight with a central moulded aperture of diameter 4.7mm. Shrinkage on the flat surface may suggest this was cast in an open mould. Patinated. The hole might have been intended for stringing as a line weight, though there is no marking to suggest this - the finder kindly notes this was found near other net sinkers close to the old course of the River Don. A weight made by rolling a rectangular billet of cast lead sheet of thickness 1.4mm, which would be wrapped around the selvedge of a net, in this case with an overlapping seam; patinated, and lightly squashed. The weight may in this case have been deposited or lost while attached to the net, which might be used for fishing or wildfowling. Examples from the riverside settlement at Flixborough suggest a local Middle Saxon use for weights of this form on the River Trent, though in London similar weights came from a late medieval boat in the Thames at Blackfriars bridge. …

A weight made by the rolling of a rectangular billet of cast lead sheet of thickness 2mm, which would be wrapped around the selvedge of a net; patinated, pierced and lightly squashed. In this case, the weight appears to have been unclenched for its removal from the net. A pierced hole might suggest light gnawing by a dog, so an eager interpreter might posit a fisherman - or perhaps a wildfowler - accompanied by his hound. Lead spinner. A disc cut from cast lead sheet and with a finely denticulated outer edge formed by a series of short knife cuts. A pair of holes of diameter c.2mm are neatly punched through the centre. Patinated. A thin cord, perhaps of horsehair, would be passed through both holes, and the cord would then be twisted. The sudden pulling of both ends of the cord would cause the disc to rotate, and the serrated edge to produce a buzzing sound. Cast annular biconvex fishing weight, with a sharp circumferential aris between its halves, a bevelled central aperture, and with eight moulded hemispherical bosses equidistantly spaced around either side. A drawn wire copper alloy loop projects from the edge. Lightly patinated. This is a modern weight for a fishing line, of a massy type more usually associated with coastal or inshore fishing. An incomplete lead or lead alloy lion headed mount, probably dating to the Post Medieval period (c. AD 1500 - c. AD 1700). The mount is oval in plan and D-shaped in cross section. It consists of a lion's head, and surrounding mane, all in relief facing outwards. The detail of the face and mane are slightly abraded though the it is clear that the lion is looking to the left. The back of the mount is plain and undecorated. The remains of an iron attachment are present, near the centre of the mount, towards the right.
